Digital Sports Media Phenomena Meet Ege Communication Students

İZMİR (Ege Agency) — As part of Ege University’s 70th Anniversary Career Events, the Faculty of Communication hosted a talk titled “A New Era in Sports Media – A Meeting with Digital Storytellers.” The event was moderated by Lecturer Dr. Yiğit Açık and featured Arhan Ata Pilavoğlu, Special Productions Editor at Socrates Magazine, and digital content creator Efe Tatlıcı as guest speakers. The talk covered a wide range of topics including storytelling in new media, building a career in sports media, and content production motivations. Vice Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Head of the New Media Department Prof. Dr. Füsun Topsumer, along with faculty members and students, attended the event.

Although he studied civil engineering and economics, Arhan Ata Pilavoğlu stated that his true goal was always to be involved in sports. He said, “While studying engineering, I knew I wouldn’t be successful in that field. Everyone experiences turning points in life. What matters is being ready for the right position at the right time.”

Pilavoğlu emphasized the transformation taking place in sports media, saying, “The era of top-down structuring is over. Now, the voices rising from the bottom are influencing the top. Today, with just a camera and a phone, we can impact major media structures. Clubs are even making transfer decisions based on fan pressure.” Highlighting the importance of storytelling, he added, “Details that may go unnoticed by the majority but resonate fully with those who notice them are what truly matter. That’s my guiding principle. I value works that someone finds excellent for specific reasons rather than those everyone simply calls ‘good.’”

“Stock Up Your Ammo and Wait for the Opportunity”

Sharing advice on sports media, Efe Tatlıcı said, “You need to be ready when the opportunity comes. You never know when it will arrive. If you’re prepared, you’ll seize it — but if your ammo is empty, it’s too late. Instead of trying to master every branch of sports, it’s more important to specialize in a specific one. Go branch by branch. You don’t have to know both football and tennis. But when you specialize in one area, that’s where you’ll stand out.”

At the end of the event, the speakers answered questions from the audience. The talk concluded with the presentation of Certificates of Appreciation to Arhan Ata Pilavoğlu and Efe Tatlıcı.
